Quality Assurance in Higher Education: Challenges and Way Forward

Background

“Quality higher education is not the bed of roses of the privileged. Rather, it is the borderless process of producing globally competent human resources to address the geo-environmental, techno-economic, socio-political, and psycho-cognitive issues and make the world a better place to live.” -EQAAC, Nepal.

Higher education serves as the foundation for the human resources needed for advancement and prosperity. The social, political, economic, and cultural advancement of a nation depends significantly on human resources produced through higher education. Such advancements, as numerous research studies indicate, require a conducive teaching and learning environment in higher education institutions (HEIs), which is a key challenge. Lack of essential knowledge, skills, and values, including critical and creative thinking, are some of the constraints faced by many higher education institutions. These pose challenges towards achieving the country’s long-term goal of “prosperous Nepal, happy Nepali.”

The increasing student dropout rate poses a big challenge to both community and private campuses, which rely heavily on student fees for operational sustainability. Therefore, community campuses, despite receiving financial support from the University Grants Commission, face a significant challenge in maintaining financial sustainability. Engaging faculty in research activities is one potential avenue for increasing revenue. The financial constraints inhibit such possibilities to a greater extent.

Amidst such problems and challenges confronted by higher education institutions, Nepal faces challenges of very high unemployment and brain drain, including the outflow of thousands of youths abroad every day in search of jobs. Ensuring quality in higher education and creating employment opportunities in the country are crucial to addressing such bigger problems. Some of the areas that are closely associated with quality education and decent employment to a greater extent are faculty development and academic excellence, good governance and better college management, adaptation and integration of technology, curriculum reform to be compatible with global advancement in the respected areas, collaboration with the industry, and deeper research and development

In these contexts, Janmaitri Multiple Campus is organizing an International Conference on Quality Assurance in Higher Education: Challenges and Prospects. The conference aims to convene academicians, researchers, policymakers, administrators, and other stakeholders to discuss the challenges of quality assurance in higher education in Nepal and explore viable solutions.
